UH OH

by Sandra | January 15th, 2010

I am notorious for my accidents with yard tools and injuries.  I seemed to have been exempt from injuries with kitchen items.  I WAS exempt.  I have been cooking and baking a long time since I was a tween and never, I mean never, did I mess around with safety when using my kitchen appliances.  I have no idea what I was thinking when in a moment of complete idiocy, I stuck my hand in my mixer with the dough hook going full speed.

Needless to say it grabbed my hand, torqued it around as I tried to pull it out and then on the return trip (it never slowed down) it grabbed my thumb, twisted it back and tore away my thumbnail as I kept trying to remove my hand from the monster.  Can you say PAIN? It could have been a lot worse, but I really messed up my thumb and my hand.

This is really bad timing because I am trying to prepare for my workshops and still have to complete some samples and I can’t even knot a thread, separate floss, hold my applique very taut, etc…….  I think it would be fair to say if it weren’t for the Codeine and Tylenol I would be in a rather foul mood.  If I am honest, the Codeine isn’t much helping with the foul mood.

It is amazing how much I use my left thumb and had no idea until I injured it.  No sympathies please, I feel enough like an idiot as it is.

Very sorry to hear about this, I hope you will feel better soon.

  2. Yikes. Chinese torture losing your thumbnail. I can’t imagine. I’m glad you didn’t break your thumb or hand.

I can be an idiot around moving things too. One time the blade of my hedge clippers dropped into the air conditioner compressor and I stupidly looked down to see it (motor was running). It flew out, whizzed by me and landed several yards away. What was I thinking?! Could have been decapitated.

I’m sorry you’re in pain and can’t sew well. Best wishes.

PS What are your thoughts on the invisible stitch (aka ladder stitch) with applique?

Sandra, You are lucky, so was I. I worked in a commercial bakery and had my arm twist by a floor mounted mixer. It hurt for months. I am sure I twisted muscles and ligaments to the max. I learned shut it off before you try anything like scrapping a bowl down or adding ingredients. To tell you the size of the bowl it held 40gallons of liquid. I learned to slow down and take my time after that incident. Chris

Sandra, so sorry to hear about your injury, I really hope you feel better soon. I love the title for your book!!! The minute it is available for pre-order from AQS, I plan to order two (just for me).

  5. OUCH! I can’t even imagine the pain.

  6. Yikes! I couldn’t even finish reading the details– I realized where you were going with the description and I already had chills up my neck. Ouch! And that’s an understatement. I can only imagine how silly you feel– we have to wonder- why do we do these things? Hope you feel better soon.

  7. Thanks all, The pain really reared its ugly head this morning so pain killers to the rescue. I think they will render me out of it for the day.

I still can’t figure out for the life of me why I did that! DUH!

  8. Sandra,
Thank you so much for giving us another reason why quilters should stay out of the kitchen!
I feel the pain from here!

How absolutely frustrating for you. I’m so sorry you got so derailed… Hang in there – and follow doctor’s orders!

  12. OUCH!!! That sounds terrible. I’ve done the spatula in the mixer thing. I’ve been lucky. Now I’ll think about you before I do that again…

Hope you’re able to stitch soon.
