Yo Yo Love

by Sandra | January 22nd, 2010

I have always loved the vintage and soft look of Yo-Yo’s on all kinds of projects.  They add such a touch of whimsy and always bring a smile.  I especially like them combined with Ric Rack as embellishments.  I am always comforted by the vintage look so I tend to design in this style for my own personal quilts.  I am drawn to the softness and reminiscent nature of them.

Usually I don’t add special borders etc. to my samples, but I couldn’t stop my imagination from switching into hyper-drive at some possibilities for this one.  Yo-Yo’s might work well with this little quilt.

I bought the Clover Yo-Yo makers awhile back and pulled one out to make some small Yo-Yo’s.  I used the smallest one and it made a 1″ wide Yo-Yo really fast.

Last night I cranked out a lot of these to play with and I will add  a small cute border that will allow for some pretty quilting too.

Off Topic:

I keep a small bag of candy in my side drawer of my desk.  There are also some sewing tools stored there too.  While I was reading something on my computer, I reached down to my left to grab a small handful of the candy and didn’t realize I had stuck my hand in the bag of cotton swabs (for cleaning my bobbin) and stuck the cotton swabs in my mouth.  I won’t be doing that again.  I think it is fair to say I have a really good level of concentration when I fail to clue in to the feel of cotton swabs vs. Hot Tamales candy in my hand.

Too funny! I’ve had the fear of doing that myself since I sometimes get so preoccupied and just munch out of habit, but have not yet actually done it….cotton swabs…yuck! lol. I need to make some yoyo this month. I am determined to start a yoyo table cloth and it will not get done this year if I don’t get off my duff and just begin. I will be using one of the larger clover yoyo makers. Did you cut circles of your fabric or leave them squares and trim once inside the maker? I’m sure there must be different ways of acheiving the yoyos…I am just looking for the most efficient way….:)

  3. Boop, I wonder if the dog biscuit wouldn’t at least have had more lavor! LOL

  4. Too funny. Ya gotta watch where you stick your hands!

  5. Shelley,

I tried both ways and the far easier way was to cut a square. I had difficulty cutting the right size circle and ended up having to do it over again. Making squares goes faster and takes less gray cells to get it right the first time. At least for me. ;-)

  6. How’s your hand doing ??

  7. Cute yoyo’s, Sandra. I have had trouble closing up the yoyo centers, unlike your perfect ones. Maybe I need to go out and get that Clover yoyo maker to help me solve that problem…

  8. You know how I do it Ivory Spring? Once I gather up the yo-yo after stitching, I take my needle back around through the pleats and gather up tightly then take the thread through the center and knot off on the back. Otherwise, like you, I too have the problem of them not closing up completely.
