You know how I do it Ivory Spring? Once I gather up the yo-yo after stitching, I take my needle back around through the pleats and gather up tightly then take the thread through the center and knot off on the back. Otherwise, like you, I too have the problem of them not closing up completely.

Cute yoyo’s, Sandra. I have had trouble closing up the yoyo centers, unlike your perfect ones. Maybe I need to go out and get that Clover yoyo maker to help me solve that problem…

I tried both ways and the far easier way was to cut a square. I had difficulty cutting the right size circle and ended up having to do it over again. Making squares goes faster and takes less gray cells to get it right the first time. At least for me.
