Ready for Her Close-Up

by Sandra | February 8th, 2010

Are you tired of my little Wren yet?  I promise this is the last of the posts on her.   She is all finished, washed, blocked and ready for her close-up.  See how she poses for the camera?

Techniques used were hand applique and embroidery, machine pieced and quilted.  No paint, colored pencils etc.  Just commercially available fabrics and thread.  Since I misplaced my colored pencils, they were never an option and in this case, I am glad.

I wish you could see her in the flesh because I think she turned out so cute, I am actually compelled to literally hold her.  For those of you in the Block Party Quilter’s Workshop, you will get to see and touch the Wren mini quilt for yourselves and I am anxious for you to!

My head is swimming with ideas to expand and create a multi-block quilt design based on this project.  Creative over drive of the brain always happens when I come up with new workshop projects.  However, I MUST finish Jason’s Pumpkin quilt after the workshops are concluded as he is becoming MOST impatient with me right now.  I think I can actually feel him giving me the evil eye at times.  LOL

This was a really fun project to work on and the Wren did come from my “Jason’s Pumpkin” design so I am all set to go on the Wrens when the time comes.  All of the coloration and  fabrics have been worked out for me already.  Always a bonus!

This concludes the Little Wren project, and I really hope you enjoyed it.

  2. Thanks Colleen :-D

  3. How could any one be tired of seeing your beautiful wren! It is amazing, you must be so proud! ♥

  4. Sandra, I’m running out of adjectives! I can almost see him blink and hear him sing. Thank you for sharing your genius.

  5. I also have enjoyed the evolution of this great project. Beautiful! I was curious of the background fabric you used, if you could please tell me the name or company.Thank you for letting us enjoy your journey.

  6. Thank you so much for sharing. I never tire of your posts. I look forward to them every day.

  7. One can never get tired at following fabulous work proceeding ;) It is really beautiful now that it is finished. The process also helps to understand how much work is included even in the seemingly smallest applique projects – if you do them properly!

  8. Thank you Joanne, I am really proud when my ideas come out like I pictured them in my head. Success is never guaranteed with every project no matter how much I try. When everything works, there is such a feeling of satisfaction it makes me want to try more and reach a new benchmark I set for myself. :-)

  9. Melanie,

Wait until you see her in person. The date is coming up FAST!

Thank you for sharing the entire process, I will really miss seeing the wren, but I know I will be thrilled when you are able to show us the progress on Jason’s Pumpkin Quilt. I really hope you are able to come up with a multi block quilt design, but whatever your next project is, I know it will be spectacular as always.

  11. Hi Deb,

Certainly, The background fabric I used is from the Lakehouse Line called “Teatime Florals Two”. I think many have gone and purchased it because I went to look at my online sources I had bookmarked for more if I needed some and they are all sold out now since I first posted the Wren! Too bad I don’t get a commission! ;-)

Here is a link for the line at Lakehouse Drygoods (the manufacturer)

Maybe you local shops can get some?? If you find some online, let me know please!

  12. Thank you Hannele!

I still find myself amazed to see these come to life as each layer of technique is added. Unfortunately, speed of a project has become more important (all important) than the final outcome. This project, took less than a week to complete. It sat on my table for a little bit waiting to be quilted, but if you put all the time together, it was probably four days total. 30 applique pieces in all.

  13. Thank you as always Sara!

p.s. A package will be shipping soon. ;-)

  14. Never fear Denise, the wren will be multiplying in the near future and be hiding in some branches on Jason’s quilt. Along with some field mice, frogs and whatever else I come up with. LOL

LOVE the little wren – and have especially enjoyed getting a close-up look at the different fabs you’ve used to create her – what fun! I had gotten away from buying fat quarters, but this is another excuse to do so! Looking forward to seeing the next issue of Jason’s pumpkin!

  16. Michele I am looking forward to the next Jason’s Pumpkin too!!! Oh how it is calling to me.
