I have been brewing the 2011 Asilomar Empty Spools Seminars workshop project idea for awhile now in my head and as always, I have been accumulating the fabrics for my design idea. I have no clue if all of these fabrics will remain, but for now, I am loving the palette. A faded fresco-like appearance.
The registration for 2011 Asilomar Empty Spools Seminars workshops is to open soon. I know a lot of you like the way I do birds and florals and are interested in that style of design, so the project will combine an urn/vase exploding with botanical elements on a background that mimics an aged fresco-like surface. I am going to try and use some of those Stonehenge fabrics I bought to create this. The pattern will end up being approximately 26-28″ square and a medallion style quilt central block design.
Here is the update: I created a quick five minute doodle of my idea for a general direction. The borders will change most likely, I just needed to frame my image for a spacial reference.

I won’t be blogging about its process for obvious reasons in fairness to those students who sign up, but when it is finished, I will show you a picture. For those of you who are able to sign up and take the workshop, I will post an additional PDF supply information list as well that will be more project specific. I will post it along with the picture here when complete.
I will obviously have to work simultaneously on two projects, Jason’s pumpkin and the Asilomar project, so obviously progress on Jason’s quilt will slow a little bit. Jason understands.

Food for thought – after the class fills and before you print up and make the kits – see if those who cannot attend are interested in purchasing a kit. (If this is convenient for you).
I can’t wait. The fabrics look wonderful!
Nancy and I sent in our registration form Monday! We are looking forward to the class. Are you going to have a kit? I like your choices of fabric so far. Thank you Jason for being understanding!
What a beautiful palate of lovely, clear colors! This is SO tantalizing.
This project sounds wonderful. As always, your students will be most fortunate.
Color me green with envy!!! I wish I were lucky enough to attend your workshop. I love the fabrics you are considering. Did you buy the batiks in Paducah?
they look very pretty . I think I have to move : (
can I come live with you ????
You know I love you Boop but I wouldn’t give up my sewing room for you. LOL
Denise,
I don’t think any of these are from Paducah (Hancock’s). I got them on a fabric shopping splurge at Fabric Depot in Portland. Talk about paradise!
Thanks Frances!
Marion, I can’t wait to see you and Nancy again. Too much fun.
Kits with this many fabrics would be prohibitely expensive for me to create but I have my thinking cap on as to how to create “fabric packs” of some of the fabrics as a purchase option. I will see what I can do.
Hi Gini,
They do make you smile don’t they? I was inspired by English Roses and David Austen roses. mmmmmmm
Sara,
I will see what I can come up with.
Ohh…I wish I were going to Asilomar too. I love the look of your sketch, and the fabrics are great. I too would love to purchase either a kit or whatever you care to put together. Pattern and instructions?
Kathy
Kathy,
It will at least be a pattern and instruction booklet I will make available after the workshop has concluded.
Sandra, Don’t forget me! Count me in for ANY kit you make. As for the cost, I’m sure everyone wouldn’t mind paying in advance. And I’ll bet you have some little workers at your house that would like to make some extra money! Whatever you can do we would appreciate.
Almost forgot-love the pattern. Especially the birds! How in the world can you scribble that in five minutes?! I’m in awe!
A kit would be nice so we don’t have to lug all our fabric with us (LOL). I just got back from an applique group meeting. One of the gals had gone to Paducah. Guess whose quilt she took a picture of and raved about how cute it was. I saw the picture and said I know the artist! Such fun!
Well now I can stop crying! Sign me up for the pattern and instruction booklet, the kit too (if available). I love your five minute doodle, I see bees in the sketch, and your fantastic birds. I would be happy to pay in advance too.
So beautiful I’m speechless.
Ok Sandra – I’m recovered now! Sigh… No pressure, but since I will be flying in from Miami I would gladly pay a premium, in advance, for a kit. Plus it takes all the angst and second guessing out of the process for me and I can relax, concentrate on technique, and just have a good time. YOU are amazing – the sketch is amazing – it looks like a 16th century dutch stillife. Wow!
Mercy and all,
I am trying to work out a solution to the fabric question that will work without breaking the bank and have a level of convenience for the student and myself. Since I can use over 60 different fabrics sometimes with a quilt like this, it takes some thinking on how to go about figuring this solution out. I will know how much I can do when the project is finished and I know exactly what was used.
I am think of creating fat eighth packets that could be pre-ordered or bought on site at the workshop for the different botanical applique components.
The choice then can be indiviual as to whether you want what I have chosen, or try out /bring your own fabrics.
Depending on the background fabric I choose, I may buy a bolt and have it for pre-order as well. I will also list the fabric and style info on the supply information that is project specific when completed.
I am assuming greens (given a hue reference swatch on the updated supply list when quilt is done) would be OK easier to bring? not?
I will try to list all of the fabrics used (batiks are so difficult since they don’t print info on the selvedge), but I will do my best to create a master fabric list, like McKenna Ryan, of the fabrics I used so those who want to purchase their own etc., can do that as well.
I am thinking of having full skein DMC embroidery floss packets to match available for purchase as well.
I like to keep the costs down for me and for you so I will see how I can work this.
Of course, much of this depends on whether I decide to drive down, or fly, how much I can do. Shipping weight to get all of this fabric down to Asilomar would be astronomical so that also needs to be considered.
I will definitely do as much as I can to make it easier for the student to just walk in for the most part and stitch. Especially for those of you who have to fly, I have been there and know exactly what you are talking about.
The new luggage fees are killer too!
Denise,
I will do my best to find some way to work this out.
Melanie,
I would never forget you!
Wow – and the class is a whole year away! I see someone above said they already registered – I didn’t think the registration was open yet – I will have to find out ASAP!! I better make the best use of the next year’s time to applique, APPlique, APPLIQUE!!! SO excited!
Oh my! I just put Stonehenge in the search box here (http://www.quiltshops.com/search.htm) (my FAVorite fab search engine) and WOW! I want them ALL!
Thank you Sandra! You’re the best! I’m sure whatever you come up with will be perfect!
Michele,
Thanks for the tip on fabric searching; works great.
Frances, after putting the words you want to search for in the box, click on “thumbnails” and you’ll SEE the search results – too cool!
HappY Mothers day !!!!
How have some people already registered for your 2011 seminar? Just curious…….
Louise,
I believe registration opens this week for 2011 classes. This will be my first time teaching there so I am not up on the procedure, but I believe registration is taken only by Fax or mail. I have been told they do not have online registration.
I have only heard of two people who had registered by mail early and I am guessing that is because they had attended Asilomar before(?)
No one can register until the information is on the website. Their original plan was to mail out the 2011 schedules yesterday and have the info on the website today, but Suzanne emailed me yesterday to say that the brochures didn’t mail yesterday and may not for a few more days. Bottom line – can’t register until the info is on the website. The two people who thought they had registered were asked to wait until the info was up on the website.
Sandra,
I just found your web site last week but have put it in my favorites…I enjoy reading your comments and advise on applique and your many followers comments. Love this block that you just drew and would love to make it with the rest of you…and agree that if a pattern or fabric kit are available, I would like to have them, most of us are willing to pay the extra to share in your talent of creating.
Thanks again for sharing your talent with us..
Pati
Sandra, Love your five-minute doodle – I couldn’t do it in 5 days.
I’m going to try and take your Asilomar workshop and probably drive down. Do you want us to pick you up on the way down from Seattle area? I know of 8 people from my area are primed and ready to send in their registration.
I had heard on Diane Gaudynski’s blog that registration was to start May 10 but it’s still not up yet.
Thank you Michele for the information! Many people are asking and I am as blind as the rest of you.
Thank you Pati,
I will try and have, at the very least, a pattern plus workbook for this available after the workshop. I am glad you enjoy the site and welcome!
Oh lord Peggy, I can see it now……
I can see it now, a HUGE party bus to Asilomar with the wild and crazy ladies from Seattle! VERY TEMPTING! I will know more concrete plans closer to the date and will let you know.
The thing is, would I be in any shape to teach once I got there?
Sandra,
It’s now May 12th; more pictures, please…
Frances,
I can show you a picture of my pile of ripped out fabric for the frog?
