Fabric Favorites

by Sandra | June 5th, 2010

I know some of you are already planning and choosing fabrics based on the pattern I am designing for the Asilomar workshop in 2011.  For those of you also wishing to purchase the pattern and make it at home once available, this may be helpful as well.

One of the lines of batiks I gravitate towards the most is the line of Robert Kaufman batiks by the Lunns.  In particular, their latest Artisan line called “Elementals”.  I am trying to keep track (for fabrics) what I am using this time and I noticed an abundance of these so far as possible choices when I get down to doing the applique.

I like the watercolor effect and lack of harsh patterns in these batiks.  These fabrics and style work very well with my scale, tonal and color palette preferences.

Michele(?) I believe you asked about some preferable fabrics I have found lately.  I found there is a new line of the “Elemental Dots” and I love them.  Good colors and small scale patterns that don’t interfere visually with the embroidery details.

eQuilter (this link lists many of them available) has just listed quite a few from the new release and I have not seen them show up elsewhere yet on my list of favorite online shops.  They are a bit slow in shipping so be forewarned.

I am not affiliated or have any deals with Kaufman fabrics, I just like these batiks a lot!

Asilomar Urn Pattern Design Update

For those who are interested, here is a design update on the pattern for Asilomar.  The “circles” are areas that need imagery for balance.  I must say this one is taking a lot of time.  A note for those planning their fabrics:  Those are not grapes you see, but olives. (lavender, lemons, olives, roses, sweet peas, iris and roses).

I am almost finished with the pattern and then I will get to see it come to life with fabric. Yeah!  Can you imagine some of those fabric samples above in this?

Have a good weekend everyone!

  1. Well, that was simple ordering the ‘Little Wren” pattern. I am loving the Asilomar pattern more and more. Please put me on your list for purchase when it becomes available. Have you tried the ‘shape builder’ tool on cs5? It is so neat and will be a real time saver. I hope that the ‘live trace’ tool has improved. Enjoy the rest of the weekend, hopefully without rain.

  2. Wowwwwie ! I love what you’ve done and I can see those sweetpeas come to life in my head ! The roses are going to be stunning too, I can see it ! I love the softness of the fabrics .

Can’t wait to see more .
You have a good weekend too !

I like the Mediterranean flavor of this bouquet, and I particularly like these two green batiks.

Beautiful! I can “see” the gorgeous Kaufman batiks in the flowers. I will have to hunt for some of the new batiks for my stash.

  5. Yahoo! Your patterns arrived in the mail today and I can’t wait to get started. Is it too much to hope that there are more pages in the Naturalist’s Notebook? Wouldn’t it be great to have companions for the little wren. I love seeing the design for Asilomar develop, and I’m sooooo glad I’m in the class. Thanks for sharing your artistry.

  6. Gini,

I fully intend to add more “pages” to the Nature’s Notebook series. :-)

  7. Denise,

These really do work well. Not only the colorations, but the pattern has just enough “subtle” movement that it adds some additional sparkle without competing with the embroidery. Always a bonus.

  8. Exactly Frances! I wanted something a little bit different and I was going for a Mediterranean arrangement.

  9. Boop,

I love sweetpeas too and had to find a way to work them in! :-D

  10. Brenda,

    I aim to please! :-D

I haven’t tried the shape builder tool yet. I did figure out finally how to remove the perspective grid. Trust me, that was huge! LOL

Wow – the pattern is growing by leaps and sweetpeas! I LOVE those fabrics – will be getting a bunch of them, I think. I also love the set that look like chicken tracks – subtle Vs in the print. Would make lovely birdy breasts, I think. :)
What is the size of the pattern? (Just adding to the angst at this point!)
Got my Dovo applique scissors yesterday! YAY!

  12. Great, just received an e-mail that the pattern was shipped, can’t wait. I happened to somehow get the perspective grid after first logging on to illustrator. The only way I could get rid of it was to close the window. If all else fails !!!!!!!. Went to the local rose show on Sunday, took pics. of the many different colours. Also bought 3 very pretty looking (I hope) sweet pea plants to plant with the seeds which are struggling to grow with all the rain we’ve been having. Guess you can tell why. Have fun with your serger.

  13. Brenda,

If you haven’t already figured it out, go to
    >View>Perspective Grid>hide (I think) its hide. Whatever it is, it is obvious. :-)

Ohhhhh a rose show, how wonderful. I was going to head out to Schreiner’s Iris Gardens soon. I may have missed the peak, but still…..

  14. Mercy,

Are you having problems with a Chinese pirate? If so I know how to stop that almost instantly. An easy fix.
