Can A Light Box Be Cool? This One Can!

by Sandra | June 11th, 2010

I already have a light box from Art-O-Graph for tracing off embroidery lines quilting lines, etc., But oh boy when I saw this sweet new toy from them, I was in lust. Is this just too cool or what?  The down side to this is that I want it BIGGER.  I have the boxy one below at 12″x18″ and it does give me much more working area compared to the slick looking LightPad. So how can I justify buying this beyond the emotional, “it looks so cool”?

I don’t use a light box to trace applique lines to my background fabrics, but I do use it for the embroidery lines when I am done with the applique bit.  Both of these have really good features.  The LightPad has a much brighter light but smaller surface area.  The box has a fluorescent light which tends to fade out at the edges, but has that all important large surface area for bigger projects.  I already own the latter and don’t really need a new one.

But, but, but..my heart is absolutely palpitating at the thought of having that cool LightPad.  Could I justify it by saying the size would travel well???  Am I stretching it a bit here?   Who travels with a light box?  Would my husband buy that argument?  Probably not.

I need to get busy on an applique project so my mind is better occupied than finding cool new things to lust after as I work on the computer stuff.

  1. Yup ! ONE COOL TOOL ! You could tell him it will save on electricity , LOL ! Isn’t hat a feature ? Oh I thought I read that , guess not ! ; )

I have the bigger one. I don’t spend enough time for the heat to bother me , but I could see how easy it would be to carry around.

  2. Boop,

You did read that. Hmmmmmmmmm, the justifications are building…….

This is perfect timing for me! I have been thinking about getting a new light box. The LightPad looks really great and says it shines brighter. Sadly I too need a larger light box. I have a flat light box and was leaning towards the slanted one.

Ach. Wait for it to get bigger. Save your money for that next yummy that will pop up sooner than later that you will really want – and use!! Bu then again, I’m assuming that you will be wanting to bring a light box to Asilomar?… (sorry) :)

  5. Michele you read my mind. Asilomar! Ohhhhh, then I could write it off as a business expense?????? :-)

  6. Denise,

My LightTracerII works great and I have had it now for years. The larger area size really does help. For the money, it is a good light box with a large area for the quilter/crafter.

I have lusted after a professional size one for years, but so far I can’t justify the use/cost issue.

  7. Sandra, I think you have a thing for gadgets! Scissors, iPad, LightPad, scissors, scissor butcher blocks, scissors etc. A girl after my own heart. Have you seen those desks at IKEA that have a cutout with glass and a shelf under it you can light up to become a light box? Now THAT is cool!

What applique project are you working on? I’m starting your beautiful Spring Tulips. Thank you so much for making it available to us!!!

    Take care!

  8. Oh, that looks sooooo good. Seem to have a jinx with light boxes, never seem to work after a while. Maybe this would be THE one!!!!!

  9. Melanie,

YES! I have seen those! I looked and looked and then realized it wouldn’t fit in my sewing room much to my dismay.

I need to work on Jason’s quilt as well finish up the Asilomar pattern and get cracking on that. IT is REALLY hard to work when summer comes on.

You are welcome on the pattern, but you know you have to share when you are done riiiiiight??????

I do have a thing for tools, gadgets and gizmos. Office supplies are my other weakness. Kind of funny really.

  10. Michele in Alabama says:

Office supplies – YES! Office Depot and Staples are almost as bad as a fabric store for me – but you can find so MANY things in a place like that to pull double duty in the sewing studio! Fun!

  11. Office supplies ….. oh yes! Pity I don’t have an office!
Big hardware and book stores are cool too. Sometimes it is hard to keep enough money to buy essentials like fabric and thread!

  12. Judy,

I become possessed the minute I walk into an office supplies store. My husband is puzzled by my fascination I think. He can’t understand why I have to look at so much. LOL

  13. What is it with men and shopping?

How do they know what they need if they don’t look around to see what is available?

Mine walks into the hardware store, goes to the spanners, finds the one he wants, then goes to the checkout. Never checks out the hammers, and wonders why I want to stroll around checking paint colours, light bulbs …. sheesh, I may find a comfortable pliers if I keep looking!
