One, No Two Bad Apples

by Sandra | August 23rd, 2010

I have spent quite a few days deliberating over a decision that is a difficult one.  I want to keep my blog uplifting and fun and not sour it with the ugly side of quilting.

However, I have been receiving more and more requests about updates on Jason’s Quilt and I think I owe those of you who really love seeing the process of this quilt an explanation of why you will no longer see updates of the quilt in process.

To the two people who have ”borrowed” heavily and crudely from Jason’s Pumpkin quilt and are now selling fused patterns of  their “variations” poorly disguised  (which are illegal derivatives still covered by my copyright):

Shame on you!  This quilt is a very personal quilt from a mother (me) to her Autistic son (Jason).  You have succeeded in scraping down to a new low in theft of a design and selling it as your own in the quilt industry.  What kind of person steals from an Autistic child for personal gain?

Unfortunately Jason saw the images on my computer and was VERY upset, “they stole my quilt!”.  I mean come on?  Who is so bankrupt morally and ethically to do something like that?

I will not name names and show images for legal reasons, or to give them a spotlight bad or good, but these people will know exactly who I am talking to since they had to be a visitor and took the opportunity to copy what they saw and profit from it at my son’s expense. Did you really think I wouldn’t see it?

Let’s clean up quilting and NOT buy patterns that are copies (somewhat or exact), or admire quilters who copy (without attribution) in national shows of other people’s work claimed as “original” when we know they are copied without permission.  If a design strikes you as similar, then guess what? there’s a problem.

Only when we point out bad behavior with the lack of our dollars will the industry listen and start to clean itself up.  If we do not, then quilters like myself will stop sharing.  So many already have and it is our great loss.  The vampires just move on to the next victim to find new blood on which to feed.

I have deliberately turned off  comments and I do not want any more discussion on this subject. Take any anger you may feel and use it constructively as I have suggested so something good can come out the ugliness that is going on in quilting.

When Jason’s quilt is complete, I will show you an image but until then, you will have to wait.  This quilt after all is for Jason and I want to salvage what is left of the quilt for HIM.

Thank you for understanding and why this is something that I can not be “Polyanna-ish” about and I promise to get back on track with more pleasant topics that we all enjoy.
