APWQ Rose and Pillow Draping

by Sandra | July 9th, 2012

I hope I am not starting to bore you with this project. I have finished the original design. I purposely used the word ”original” because as my creative juices started kicking in and I gave my brain the freedom to wander, of course I thought of additional ideas. I may, may, add a little bit of applique to each side. Think pillow borders.

Our air conditioning let us down over the hot weekend and I was going no where near the muggy sewing room, hot irons, or a sewing machine giving off heat. The computer was also shut down to minimize on the heat output. So any action on my creative ideas was put on hold until the repair guy showed up.

Early this morning, the air conditioning has been fixed. Thank goodness!

As you can see in the photos, I am draping the design piece over a pillow form to get a basic Idea how I want to put this together. I pulled this red Oakshott fabric (yummy). The color is Campion and the photo (any photos) do not do this fabric justice. Isn’t it a beautiful color? This fabric is of a much higher quality than the shot cloth and has a silk-like sheen to it.

The Oakshott Campion fabric is also a perfect match to the Cosmo embroidery thread colors I used for the lettering (colors #341 & 345).

I am thinking I will use The Oakshott fabric on each side of the center design as left and right borders or maybe for some piping. The pillow will be a 14″ x 20″ (35.56cm x 50.8cm) rectangular pillow. Fabric Depot has the nicest Down feather pillow forms and I picked one up over the weekend for this project.

If I have time today, I am going to sketch out my ideas for a couple of simple side applique and/or embroidery designs and see how they look. If they are extraneous to the overall design, then I will drop the idea(s).

I think it is really important to know when to stop adding ‘stuff’.  Read anything you want between those lines and you are probably following my thoughts exactly.

I feel for you on the A/C I’m in WV and just went through the “derecho” storm and had no power at all for a few days, so I know how you felt! I’m fascinated by the Oakshott fabric. How was it to work with? I’ve wondered about it, and was afraid it wouldln’t be stable, being handwoven. As for boring me, hardly! This was a fascinating project to watch come togther and it’s beautiful. V

Sandra, What a lovely design. I hope we see this available on your web site soon. I bought some Oakshott fabric last year in Houston in several colors but haven’t used it yet. You are an inspiration!
I’m thinking white ric-rack edges over that red Oakshott would be sweet.
